Covid-19: SANBS sees a decline in blood supply

KILLARNEY – SANBS are hosting a blood drive at Killarney Mall from 30 March to 5 April.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has seen a decline in their blood supply over recent days.

Over 800 blood drives have been cancelled resulting in the loss of over 20 000 units of blood.

According to SANBS communications officer Khensani Mahangu, in order to combat this shortage, SANBS have chosen major malls across the country for their blood drives. This means that they can appeal to as many people as possible.

Sandton City, for example, was one of the major hubs.

During these drives, SANBS is strictly adhering to WHO and NICD prescribed measures to ensure the safety of staff and patrons during this time.

Extra precautions including hygiene and infection control practices as well as social distancing measures are being observed. Only a few donors will be allowed inside at one time.

Donors are encouraged to pre-book and make an appointment before they arrive in order to adhere to social distancing.

Upon arrival at the donor centre, a screening process takes place at all entry points in order to rule out risk factors including a history of international travel and other virus-related risks.

Blood drives will still continue at donor centres and mobile drives are uploaded to Facebook daily.

SANBS is hosting a drive at Killarney Mall from 30 March to 5 April between 10am to 5pm.
