Covid-19: Sandton among the epicentres of outbreak in Gauteng

SANDTON – Minister of Defence and Military Veterans identifies Sandton as one of the epicentres of the Covid-19 virus outbreak in Gauteng

Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula revealed that Sandton and Bedfordview are hotspots for the rapid spread of the Covid-19 virus outbreak in Gauteng.

On the eve of the 21-day national lockdown, during a SABC interview, Mapisa-Nqakula revealed this information was shared during an earlier ministerial briefing.

Social media spiralled into a frenzy as locals shared their concerns.

According to Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp, people need to start realising the severity of the situation. “Lockdown means lockdown. Stay at home and stay safe. Only go out if it is absolutely necessary for groceries, medical treatment, etc. Only those deemed essential services should be out on the streets and then only when necessary.”

Earp added that the South Africa Police Service, together with the South African National Defence Force, will be monitoring the movements of people and conducting random roadblocks.

“Members of the public who ignore the lockdown can be charged and/or fined. The only way to remain safe is to avoid as much contact with others as possible,” he said.

In an effort to ensure the safety and flow of suspected Covid-19 cases in the area, the Sandton Central Management District has announced that the Department of Health has set up a tent to support Sandown Clinic in West and Duodar Lane. “This is to help isolate patients with suspected coronavirus symptoms visiting the Sandton clinic,” read a statement by the management district.

The Sandown Clinic is open Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 4pm.

“It is critical that we as citizens play our role in a responsible manner in order to flatten the curve and give our dedicated doctors and hospital staff a fighting chance to deal with critical patients,” Earp added.

The interview aired on SABC News on 26 March.
