Sandton SPCA pleads for donations during the Covid-19 lockdown

SANDTON – Even during the 21 Days Lockdown, the Sandton SPCA will remain dedicated to their core mandate of preventing animal cruelty.

The Covid-19 lockdown which will commence on 27 March until 16 April, has a significant effect on many areas of society including the Sandton SPCA.

As a Non-Profit Organisation, which receives no government funding, the centre relies heavily on donations from the public and its supporters. They occasionally host fundraising events which were cancelled.

“Due to the national lockdown, we have had to cancel our events for the foreseeable future.  These include our Cyclethon, various pub quizzes as well as a Mutt Walk.  Our annual Kilimanjaro climb is also in jeopardy at this stage,” said Sandton SPCA’s General Manager, Ralph Hohls.

“We have potentially lost a potential income of more than 1 million rand due to Covid-19,” he said. “If you add to that our monthly expenses of just under R600 000.00 we are at a severe disadvantage right now.”

During the lockdown, the staff at the centre will remain on the premises. “This will ensure that our animals will continue to receive excellent care and that all their needs will be taken care of,” Hohls explained.

The following are essentials that the staff needs:

  • Blankets
  • 3 Beds or mattresses
  • Towels
  • Sheets
  • Pillows
  • Non-perishable food items
  • Male Toiletries
  • Hot plate

The donations can be dropped off at the Sandton SPCA by Thursday at 4.30pm. Alternatively, you can contact the General Manager on gm@sandtonspca.org.za to arrange collection.

“We would be grateful to receive items such as dry dog and cat food as well as wet kitten food and kitten litter.”

The physical address is 350, 9th Street Marlboro Gardens
