No panic buyers at Sandton City

SANDTON CITY – Sandton City Mall is getting ready for the nationwide lockdown

Sandton City, the epicentre of the north with just two days to the national lockdown in South Africa was… sombre and calm.

The food court specifically which is always buzzing had but just one or two people having their morning coffee.

A sad sight indeed, shoppers were not too excited to tell the Sandton Chronicle about their lockdown plans. Some however happily obliged and shared.

Daniella Vere who was shopping for the essentials at the mall told us her plan of staying sane during the 21-Day national lockdown which starts on 26 March to 16 April.

“Just buying perishables so canned foods, avoiding things that will go off, toiletries and just staying at home. Sleeping, watching TV and just trying to keep yourself occupied so you don’t lose it. ”

Tulani Madala who was also doing his shopping and a Riverclub resident said that canned food is essential. “Foods that will last a long period of time and clean water. Typical needs, eggs and live chickens would be smart too. Ways to start a fire, ways to keep warm,” said Madala.

The stores in the mall were filled with the usual customers and the Sandton residents were relaxed.

With no sign of panic buying at the supermarkets, the only place with some activity was Dis-Chem pharmacy. Stocking up on medication and sanitizer is key this season.
