Braamfontein Spruit takes care of its own

BRYANSTON – The Braamfontein Spruit Rehabilitation Project is hard at work cleaning up the river in Bryanston East.

The Braamfontein Spruit Rehabilitation Project got down and dirty for the environment.

The non-profit organisation along with some volunteers spent the morning of 14 March filling refuse bags with trash and other unwanted waste around the Braamfontein Spruit. The team began at the bridge on Belgrave Street and continued right through to the bridge on Bryanston Drive.

The river clean-ups are hosted by the organisation every few months to encourage the community involved in keeping its own environment clean.

According to founder Barry Cribb, Bryanston community members were previously too afraid to use the area around the river due to a concern for safety. Now that the grass has been cut, many residents have flocked back to the space to take afternoon walks with their pets and for early morning runs.

“It is starting to look a lot better and it is nice to see everyone came back to the area but we need people to get more involved,” Cribb said.

The space is utilised each week by one of the area’s most attended parkruns.

Join in on the next river clean up on 16 May.
