Protect your business from cyberattacks while many work from home due to Covid-19

JOBURG – Cybersecurity expert and J2 Software CEO John Mc Loughlin said that effective cyber risk management requires a comprehensive approach.

The coronavirus has seen many employers taking precautions such as requesting that employees work from home to minimise the risk of infections in the workplace.

This also means that businesses have to ensure that they are protected from outside threats, such as cybercriminals who may use this as an opportunity to infiltrate networks, access large volumes of data and endanger millions of people.

Cybersecurity expert and J2 Software CEO John McLoughlin said, “With many employees working from home for the first time, there will be many new problems that might not have been addressed or maybe not even thought of. Most businesses have just started to realise the magnitude of the cyber risk and many started making changes in their traditional setups to match the threat.”

Working from home means using laptops and desktops that might not have firewalls installed. McLoughlin added that it is essential to ensure compliance around data security, which includes issues such as data encryption and remote backups. “Effective cyber risk management requires a comprehensive approach employing risk assessment, measurement, mitigation, transfer, and planning, and the optimal program will depend on each company’s unique risk profile and tolerance.

Mc Loughlin explained that security challenges can manifest whenever new technology is integrated into business infrastructure, bringing new and additional complexity to the company’s technology footprint. “There are tools to ensure security, compliance and allow you to confirm that the work is being done and completed within policy. These tools will assist management without infringing on the user’s ability to complete their work.”
