Vibrancy surrounds Shavathon

BRYANSTON – The annual Cansa Shavathon brought laughter and bright colours to Bryanston Shopping Centre.

The Cancer Association of South Africa’s (Cansa) annual Shavathon created a vibrant atmosphere at Bryanston Shopping Centre on 29 February.

Celebrating its 17th year, the Shavathon has remained one of the association’s biggest and most-loved fundraising events, bringing solidarity within the community.

People of all ages came to the Shavathon booth to either shave their hair, add a bit of spray paint or pay a bailout fee. Colouring your hair or paying the bailout fee has become additional options for those who may not want to shave their hair or cannot get shaved on the day.

The volunteers at the centre with their infectious and energetic energy made sure to encourage the community to get involved. “We are excited to get more people involved and make them aware of the cause and just how impactful their contributions can be,” said volunteer Tina van Heerden.

Maria Scholtz, head of the association’s sustainability said, “Volunteers not only help to fight cancer through active involvement in our health awareness campaigns and national projects but also gain from the experience by working with a number of mentors, learning leadership skills and meeting new people who enhance their lives, as well as those of their families.”

With close to R3 000 raised in a space of six hours, the team of volunteers were mighty proud of their handy work. All of the funds raised will go towards providing a unique integrated service to the public as well as those affected by cancer.

“As a leading role-player in cancer research [more than R12 million spent annually], the scientific findings and knowledge gained from our research are used to realign our health programmes as well as strengthen our watchdog role to the greater benefit of the public,” Scholtz added.

“It all goes towards a bigger cause at the end of the day,” Van Heerden concluded as she welcomed yet another person in her chair for a spray.
