Celebratory smiles filled the atmosphere as St Stithians College recently hosted the annual Thandulwazi Saturday School Programme Awards Ceremony in Bryanston. The heart-warming celebration recognised the top Grade 9 to 12 learners in its tutoring programme.
The Thandulwazi Saturday School targets learners in grades 9 to 12 from under-resourced schools, serving communities in disadvantaged areas. The focus is on providing extra tuition in core subjects such as mathematics, sciences, accounting and English.
The Saturday school is just one of the four offerings made available by the Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy which was initiated by the St Stithians Foundation in 2005. The academy also offers a teacher development programme, intern-teacher training programme and a learner scholarship programme.
According to Velaphi Gumbi, head of the Thandulwazi mathematics and science academy, the learners were equally as proud of their achievements for last year. “The Thandulwazi Academy Meritorious Awards Ceremony on Saturday acknowledged a job well done by both the 2019 Thandulwazi Teachers and Learners, but also conscientised them that the milestones achieved point to more opportunities ahead,” she said.
