SANDTON – Thabo Treffers is the IDO World Hip-Hop solo battle champion.

Dancing all the way up is hip-hop dancer, Thabo Treffers. When he started his journey in dance from the tender age of seven, Treffers never imagined that he would be on the world stage at just 20 years old.

Born in Cape Town and now a Sandton resident, one of his biggest achievements was winning the International Dance Organisation (IDO) Hip-Hop World Championships in October last year. He took the title of world champ which escalated his determination to be the best.

Naturally talented, he was also mentored by Craig Bullock who is his manager and owner of the world-known dance studio, DanceWeb SA where Treffers also teaches.

One of his recent highlights was doing a gig for DJ Maphorisa. “I just did a gig for DJ Maphorisa which was very intense because of the training before. I had to get on the same level as the other dancers. It was great, performing for 5 000 people was very cool.”

With many travel plans on the horizon, Treffers will be visiting the Netherlands, Spain, France and lastly, Germany

“As a studio, we’re going to the Netherlands for a competition so I decided to start my journey there. Both my parents are Dutch, so I kinda know the language so it will be easier for me.”

His trip to Paris and Spain will be a short holiday for a little and then it’s off to Germany to dance his heart out.

“I’m part of a dance crew on that side of the world which is quite hectic. I’m trying to go there as much as possible and I bring them here too.”

Some of the motivation for his craft comes from the new generation. “It’s on a rising stage and I enjoy it because we feel everything, I just let the music control me.”

Living, breathing and eating dance, Treffers intends on getting a lot more sponsors, put out more dance project workshops and just be the motivation to others out there. “I want to be that icon I set myself out to be and give back.”

With the support and love from his parents and close friends, he will do just that. Some of his advice to the dreamers and other creatives is to ‘just trust the process’.
