Stage 2 load-shedding to continue until Sunday at 6am

JOBURG – Stage 2 loadshedding will be necessary on Saturday to replenish reserves to better prepare for the coming week, said Eskom in a released statement.

Eskom started implementing stage 2 load-shedding on 20 February and this will continue until Sunday (23 February).
Eskom explained that this was because of the increased shortage in generation capacity. “While we expect three generation units to return to service today, we lost a further two units last night to unplanned breakdowns. Stage 2 loadshedding will be necessary on Saturday to replenish reserves to better prepare for the coming week.”
The power utility said unplanned outages were at 11 562MW as at 6.40am this morning, while planned maintenance is 5 076MW. “Emergency reserves are currently being utilised to supplement the shortage in capacity. We will provide regular updates.”
Eskom has warned that because of the power system that remains unpredictable and constrained, load-shedding will be implemented at short notice.
Customers are urged to continue to use electricity sparingly by doing the following:
  • Set air-conditioners’ average temperature at 23ºC
  • Switch off your geysers over peak periods
  • Use the cold water tap rather than using the geyser every time
  • Set your swimming pool pump cycle to run twice a day, three hours at a time
  • At the end of the day, turn off computers, copiers, printers and fax machines at the switch.
Eskom appeals to customers to revisit their load-shedding schedules on the Eskom or local municipal websites, depending on their electricity supplier, to review amendments.
