Fibre pulls at the fabric of society

PARKMORE– After having fibre installed in the area, residents of Parkmore were left with disastrous roads.

After fibre was installed in Parkmore, residents never thought it would result in a damaged road which had not been repaired for two years.

Parkmore resident, Razia Cassim is fed up with the state of the eroded road on the corner of 13th Street and Virgnia Avenue.

“I had an issue when the company installing the fibre at the time hit a water pipe at the corner. It’s been over two years. Even after an incident was logged with the council they never came to fix the road,” she claimed.

Marketing and communications manager at Joburg Water, Isaac Dhludhlu said they had been made aware of the problem and had logged another urgent call.

“The call is still active on the system and should be attended by Thursday, 30 January,” he said.

“You will recall that this is based on the new call we logged and turnaround times differ from depot to depot based on the workload. However, standard service standards are 24 hours for sewer and 48 for water.”

While the burst water pipe had been repaired, the curb and pavement has been left unattended resulting in potholes and eroded tar.

“I have had to fill the area with rubble to ensure that cars don’t get damaged in that area,” said Cassim.

Ward 103 councilor Vincent Earp also commented on the matter.

“At the moment there is a big pothole there as well. It’s not acceptable. I’m telling you now that when you have a burst pipe and they do the repair, Joburg Water has got a reinstatement team that comes out and does the repair of the pavement or replacement,” said Earp.

“If it is affecting the curbstone and the tarmac, then they are supposed to put a wayleave in to the Joburg Roads Agency to do that part of the repair, but two years is absolutely unacceptable to get that job done… There is supposed to be a reinstatement team and they didn’t do that obviously and that is why the resident is upset and I don’t blame the resident at all.”

Dhludhlu apologised for the inconvenience caused.
