City Power implements Stage 2 load-shedding

JOBURG – City Power customers were spared load-shedding in the past week, as they had enough generating capacity at the time.

City Power Joburg customers survived load-shedding the past weekend after Eskom implemented load-shedding Stage 2 until at least Thursday this week (6 February) but this has changed for Joburg residents.

City Power said at the time last week that they had enough generating capacity and did not have to implement load-shedding for their customers. However, today (3 February) they informed customers on the City Power Twiter page that they had lost generating capacity at Kelvin substation, “Unfortunately, this has forced us to embark on load-shedding at Stage 2 as declared by Eskom.”

The tweet in part read, “We lost one line which was impacted by the damage to the 275kv Prospect/Sebenza Line No.1 on Saturday night (1 February). This damage plunged most of the suburbs east and central Johannesburg into darkness.”

The line never recovered and is currently up for repairs. Load-shedding for the City started from 12pm on 3 February.

Meanwhile, Eskom will halt load-shedding from 4pm to 6pm during the day to ease traffic during peak times. In a statement, it said it is a pilot programme aimed at achieving an appropriate load-shedding philosophy. When possible, Eskom will also halt load-shedding also between 6am and 9am.
