Knit to break the world record and provide warmth for the needy

HURLINGHAM –The group is looking for donations of wool which can be dropped off at reception at Rosehaven Retirement Village.

KnitWits for the Needy invites all local knitters to join them in knitting a blanket measuring almost two acres to celebrate the Springbok’s 2019 World Cup win.

Local KnitWits meet every Saturday morning in the Gallilee Room at Rosebank Union Church in Hurlingham to knit together.

At present, they are knitting/crocheting 160cm x 160cm blankets which will be sewn together for the Guinness World Record for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.

According to KnitWits Greta Collier, 2 754 blankets are needed to make this humongous blanket. Next year, the blanket, measuring 7 050.24m², will be displayed in Port Elizabeth where 2019 Springbok rugby captain Siya Kolisi was raised.

The blankets will then be dismantled and distributed to many needy homes and institutions.

Collier said, “Our group is desperately requesting donations of unwanted wool – to that, they can continue to make South Africa a better place.”

Donations can be dropped off at reception at Rosehaven Retirement Village on the corner of William Nicol Drive and St Andrews Road, Hurlingham.
