Power system under pressure following heavy storms and rains #Load-shedding

JOBURG – Eskom said they have adequate reserves for their emergency generators.

Eskom released a statement which said that the power system is under pressure this morning (14 January), following heavy storms and rains that have hit Mpumalanga this week.
The power utility said this caused disruption to the coal supply overnight but they were able to recover in time for the morning peak. For that reason, Eskom does not anticipate load-shedding during the day. Furthermore, Eskom said that they have adequate reserves for their emergency generators and dam levels are high.
Unplanned outages or breakdowns were at 11 723MW as at 6.30am this morning (14 January). “We are monitoring the power system closely while mitigating risks associated with flooding and storms in and around our power stations and feeding mines,” said Eskom.
“Our engineers are working on the system and design changes that are required to enable us to cope with an increased risk of flooding. Should we lose some generation units during the day, we will use emergency reserves. However, if we experience drastic changes in the system, load-shedding may have to be implemented.”
Eskom, therefore, requested customers to work with them by reducing their demand as far as possible in order to help avoid or reduce the level of load-shedding. “We will continue to give periodic updates on the status of the power system to keep users and the public updated of changes as they occur.”
