Bryanston Primary donates 600 books for charity book drive

BRYANSTON – Bryanston Primary School learners collected and donated 600 books to the Tiyani Junior School in Diepkloof Soweto as part of its charity book drive.

The learners of Bryanston Primary School, in partnership with Absa Bank, collected over 600 books to donate to the Tiyani Junior School in Diepkloof Soweto as part of its charity book drive on 2 December.

The book drive has resulted in the establishment of a new library at the school, with the assistance of Alliance Française, who donated and installed the shelves for the library.

“In South Africa, there is a need to develop a culture and love of reading. In order to do this, our children require access to books, not just for educational purposes but books that stimulate their minds, entertain and stir their creativity and imagination,” said Oscar Swanepoel, head of the English department at Bryanston Primary.

“Thank you to all the learners who donated a book for this worthwhile cause. Well done to the heads of culture Amy Rigden and Vutshila Chavalala who together with Grade 4 learner, Brooke Mestrum, lead the charity programme,” said acting principal Morne Marx.

Raesibe Mathabatha, from Tiyani School’s management team, was very thankful for the donation to the school. “We are very grateful to Bryanston Primary School and Absa for their support. The gift of books has opened a wonderful world for our learners and has given them a gift that will last a lifetime. We hope to establish a partnership with Bryanston Primary in 2020,” she said.

Bryanston Primary School looks forward to expanding its book drive next year, uplifting those less fortunate by providing the world of possibilities made available through books and reading. “This initiative is the start of a new future generation of knowledgeable citizens and I am proud of our learners that activated this project,” Swanepoel added.
