Record breaking burgers

WOODMEAD – McDonalds South Africa attempted to break the South African record for most cars served in an hour.

In the world of breaking records then take-away giant McDonald’s is doing it all. In an attempt to break the McDonald’s Drive-Thru record attempt, the Woodmead Retail Park branch was a buzz.

Happiness, smiles and overall good food was the mood for the morning on World Aids Day. The number to beat was 208 and the goal was 500. Speaking to Greg Soloman, CEO of McDonald’s South Africa, he was confident in their attempt.

“It’s a great privilege. Today is 1 December it’s World Aids Day and we are always looking for ways to raise money and give to our local communities. There are six restaurants in Mzansi that participated. Our record was 208 and I am pleased to say we broke that within half an hour.” he said.

He mentioned that in order to break the record their service standards never changed.

“We served the customers just like how they would come to us every other day. The difference is that we prepared very well for it.”

Staff on the ground were all smiles. Sesethu Simelane and Lennet Mqhulwa told us how they felt about working on the line.

“It was great, we feel so happy that we made it,” said Simelane.

“We got here at 6am, it was great because we all had the energy, we were all prepared, happy and excited.”

Soloman said 24 years ago the first McDonald’s came to South Africa. The first Drive-Thru was located in Blackheath, 300 stores later McDonald’s is the go-to after-party or midnight snack. “We are now very happy to have 75 per cent of our restaurants as drive-thru stores.

“We prepared for about two weeks, we got great staff on the floor. For us it’s about excellence; for us it is about stretching ourselves.

“All the proceeds from today will go to six local charities within the area –it’s for a great cause.”

The proved that they are indeed the best drive-drive-thru in the world – the Woodmead restaurant served just over 450 cars in one hour. Unofficially, they just missed the 500 mark.

Not to worry, Soloman ensures a great December of food. “December for us is always about bringing your favourites back home– the Big Mac, the French fries, the famous strawberry shake and the Oreo Mc flurry.

“We are going to say to our customers over this festive season, come to McDonald’s for all your favourites and we will impress you with our service.”
