ANC reclaims Joburg, Geoff Makhubo is the new Joburg mayor

JOBURG – Makhubo received the majority of the votes from the Johannesburg Council.

The Johannesburg Council has elected the new Joburg mayor, ANC candidate Geoff Makhubo.

This after the previous meeting was postponed on 28 November for further legal consultation to determine what constitutes a ‘majority’ in terms of the rules of the council.

The council convened today, 4 December, as the meeting was adjourned to allow chief whips of the different parties to report back to caucuses on the legal opinion.

Former Mayor Herman Mashaba stepped down from the position at the beginning of November, with his last day in office on 27 November.

The two other mayoral candidates were EFF Musa Novelau and DA Funzela Ngobeni.

Out of the 268 votes casts, zero spoiled, Novelau received 30 votes, Ngobeni received 101 votes and Makhubo 137.

City of Johannesburg speaker Vasco da Gama said in terms of voting, 50 per cent plus one would be 136 votes.
