Redhill mathlete nabs top 20 finish in national challenge

MORNINGSIDE – Grade 4 Redhill learner Minjing Chen was awarded a top 20 finish at this year's Nestle Nespray South African Mathematics Challenge.


Grade 4 Redhill School learner Minjing Chen was one of the top 20 winners at this year’s Nestlé Nespray South African Mathematics’ Challenge.

The 10-year-old youngster was one of 82 000 Grade 4 to 7 learners from across South Africa who took part in the challenge. Minjing ranked in the top 11 of the junior (Grade 4 to 5) category.

Nestlé Nespray partnered with the South African Mathematics Foundation and the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa to run the challenge. Nestlé Nespray senior brand manager Pumla Mkhize said, “By being part of this campaign we can make a change in South Africa by allowing children in disadvantaged areas to get access to additional tutoring workshops, teacher and learner workshops that the South African Maths Foundation can do with us as sponsors on the competition.”

Shelli Nurcombe-Thorne, Redhill’s marketing and communications manager added, “This is a massive achievement especially as over 80 000 learners across the country took part – we are exceptionally proud of her.”
