Sandton needs ‘active’ residents

WOODMEAD – The Sandton CPF, together with the Sandton Police Station, host an open meeting to discuss Sandton's crime statistics.

Crime in Sandton continues to decrease but some areas remain of great concern, the Sandton Community Policing Forum and the Sandton Police Station noted in their opening meeting on 30 October.

The meeting explored the crime statistics between the previous financial year and the current financial year.

According to the station’s statistics department, there has been an increase in contact crimes (instances whereby the victim comes face to face with the suspect during the event of a crime). A few areas of concerns across all four sectors are Woodmead, Bryanston, Morningside and Kelvin.

Colonel Samuel Mohlanga, who was standing in for Station Commander Brigadier Egen Moodley, however, noted there has been quite a ‘remarkable change’ in the overall performance of the Sandton precinct – there has been a drop of 938 cases reported in comparison to 8 787 cases the previous financial year.

He added that Moodley attributed this drop to the immense collaborative work by all sides involved. “Brigadier Moodley has attributed this tremendous drop to the members of the SAPS, the private security companies that SAPS are collaborating with, JMPD, Gauteng Transport [Department] and everyone who attends these meetings.”

The forum’s chairman Anthony Modena added that yes, the outlook was not perfect but the precinct was moving in the right direction. Modena, who would be stepping down as chairman at the end of the month, encouraged the community to remain active residents.
