The South African Police Service, together with Vodacom, has launched the My SAPS mobile app to provide citizens with a new and convenient way of reporting criminal activity.
Police minister Bheki Cele said, “This app aims to bring communities closer to government services by a touch of a button. It is clear with this piece of technology at our disposal, we as the police service are a step closer to turning the tide against crime.”
National spokesperson, Brigadier Vish Naidoo, confirmed that the application was developed a few years ago and testing began earlier this year.
According to Randburg Police Station head of communication, Captain Makgowanyana Maja, the purpose of the app is to report crime tip-offs to the crime stop call centre. “It also makes it easy for the members of the public to access to nearest police stations, as well as all SAPS social media platforms,” he added.
Community members are encouraged to download and make use of the app. “It can also be used to report crime anonymously,” Maja said.
Naidoo added that the app is available for download on Android and Apple mobile devices.
