Joburg Water praised for pipe replacement

RIVERCLUB – MMC Nico De Jager and residents of the River Club Estate commend Joburg Water for its efficient emergency pipe replacement.

Environment and Infrastructure Services MMC, councillor Nico de Jager, and the residents of River Club Estate has commended City entity Joburg Water for its efficient and effective services on an emergency pipe replacement following frequent water interruptions in the area.

According to estate supervisor Gaby Sinton, the estate experienced a huge loss in water recently due to a burst pipe. “Joburg Water responded instantly. Some of the guys were even here working on the burst pipe until almost 1am,” she said.

De Jager, accompanied by members of Joburg Water, went to inspect the progress of the pipe replacement. According to De Jager, due to a combination of ageing infrastructure and an increase of high-density housing, the area itself was experiencing a larger number of pipe bursts.

The estate has since undergone a R1.7-million pipe replacement. “It is always difficult when we do emergency work because it means that sometimes we need to access some expenditure that needs to be authorised but it needs to be done as this will significantly reduce the amount of [pipe] bursts in the area,” he said.

Since Joburg Water has actively tackled pipe replacements, there has been a reduction of 3 000 pipe bursts this year in comparison to the previous year. “We hope that this will further contribute to the steady supply of water and services to the communities in this area,” De Jager added.

With 12 local labourers commissioned and 550 meters of pipe still remaining, Joburg Water has estimated the project’s completion for early next year.
