Attempted hijacking gone wrong

SANDTON – Joburg Flying Squad police members arrest three suspects following an attempted hijacking on Grayston Drive.

Johannesburg Flying Squad members were busy with crime prevention patrols on 13 October when they saw suspects attempting to hijack a white VW Polo on the corner of Grayston Drive and Linden Street in Sandton.

When the suspects realised that they had been spotted, they started shooting at the police officers who returned fire. The suspects jumped into a maroon Mercedes-Benz and a chase ensued.

The suspect’s vehicle crashed into a wall at the corner of 6th and Chadwick avenues in Wynberg and they were apprehended. Two 9mm firearms were recovered and three suspects were detained at Bramley Police Station.

According to Johannesburg Flying Squad communication officer Raymond Sambo, one of the suspects works at a car wash in Alexandra which is where they stole the vehicle from.

“It was drizzling on that afternoon so they couldn’t get far which is why their car crashed, and we have managed to locate the owner of the car,” said |Sambo.

“I can confirm that all three suspects have been arrested for attempted hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The suspects are aged between 25 and 31 and they will appear in court soon.”
