Varsity College students remain vigilant

SANDTON – IIE Varsity College Sandton students recently received crime prevention techniques from Cobra Self-Defense instructors.

In light of the escalating gender-based violence in the country, IIE Varsity College Sandton hosted Cobra Self-Defense instructors who educated students on how to remain vigilant and protect themselves by equipping them with useful tips and techniques.

Students were taken through various crime scenarios and provided with alternative solutions with how to deal with crime. With Varsity College being a student orientated area, the instructors focused on crime prevention methods relevant to student life on campus.

Instructor Antony Hoofer provided an overview of their visit. “Crime prevention techniques are different,” he said. “You have to relate to different audiences. This might be in a corporate space, complex or in the public. Varsity College is filled with students so we have to deal with crimes matters they can relate to, like how does one react to when their phones or laptops are being stolen.

“The lessons went well, the students showed interest and we’re glad that we helped them with self defence techniques and other useful tips.”

The college’s public relations and events coordinator Khwezi Mchunu said the lessons benefitted students, teaching them to be more aware of their surroundings and enabling them to defend themselves in future.
