Sandton filling station owes the City R13 million

SANDTON – The filling station came to the attention of the authorities during a sting operation after receiving a tip-off that they were connected to the City of Joburg's water illegally.

The City of Johannesburg MMC for Finance, Funzela Ngobeni is a very pleased man as he announced that a Sandton filling station that owes the City R13 million for water has started paying off their debt.

Ngobeni said in a statement that the owners of the filling station were connected to the City’s water illegally. The first payment of R3 million was received on 9 October, ‘With another tranche of R3 million expected to be paid on 7 November 2019.’

The Sandton filling station came to the attention of the authorities last week during Operation Buya Mthetho sting operation, after receiving a tip-off that the owners were connected to the City’s water illegally, Ngobeni explained.

“We have advised the owners of the filling station to sign an acknowledgement of debt with the City to pay off the balance of R7 million, once the subsequent payment of R3 million is received.”

Ngobeni said going forward they will insist the owners continue to pay their accounts on a monthly basis.

The filling station’s water supply will remain disconnected until the debt is settled.
