Water restoration under way at Sandton Gautrain Station

SANDTON – Joburg water has begun installing a separate meter for the Sandton Gautrain Station while MEC Jacob Mamabolo expects water restoration by the end of business today.

The installation of a separate water meter has begun to take shape outside the Sandton Gautrain Station following a court order issued to City of Joburg Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba to restore all water services.

According to Gauteng MEC for Transport and Infrastructure Jacob Mamabolo, the water supply, which had been cut off since 6 September, had to be restored by the end of business today.

The City had reached an agreement with the Gautrain whereby it would deal directly with the City, eliminating middleman Cedar Park Properties. Included in this arrangement was the installation of a separate water metre for the station. This will allow the station to directly deal with the City when it came time for payment.

A station security guard said that the installation only began at around mid-day. “I went to lunch at 11 and they weren’t here but when I came back, they were,” he said. According to the Joburg Water team tasked with installing the meter, it was unlikely that the station would be fully restored by the end of today.

Mamabolo has said that he would be keeping a close eye on the progress at the station. He emphasized that should the water supply not be restored by the end of day, he would apply for urgent court action to lay a charge of contempt of court.
