Young Redhill learner shines at Brazillian Taekwondo World Championships

MORNINGSIDE – Ronin Henning, a Grade 7 learners, was awarded a gold medal for sparring during the championships.

A 13-year-old learner from Redhill School was awarded a gold medal in the recent Brazillian Taekwondo World Championships.

Ronin Henning has been practising taekwondo since he was five years old and was drawn to some of the traits he could learn from the sport. “The self-control, discipline and confidence shown by the then-black belts, is what I wanted for myself,” said Ronin.

The world championships were hosted in Iguazu Falls in Brazil where competitors of all ages participated in individual and group competitions. Ronin was a part of the South African team that competed in the championships and won his gold medal in the sparring portion of the competition.

Ronin said that one of the things he enjoys most about taekwondo is how it constantly challenges him and pushes him to learn something new.

He first competed internationally two years ago at the Argentinian Taekwondo World Championship. Although this was Ronin’s first international competition, he received a silver medal for sparring.

Leading up to competitions, Ronin trains every day to prepare. During the competition, Ronin said that while he was both nervous and excited to be competing against other athletes from around the world, it was great to make new friends.

Upon receiving his medal, Ronin said,

“It felt like a dream come true, a goal finally achieved.”

Ronin already has plans to compete internationally again and plans to compete in next year’s South African Taekwondo Championships and at the World Taekwondo Championships in 202.
