SPCA inspectors bravely rescue dog from sewerage drain

MARLBORO – Sandton SPCA investigators bravely climbed into a deep sewerage drain to rescue a trapped dog.

Inspectors from the Sandton SPCA were successful in a brave attempt to rescue a dog that was stuck in a sewerage drain.

On 12 September, two security guards from the Marlboro Gautrain Station notified the SPCA that they had noticed a stray dog trapped in a nearby sewerage drain over the past few days.

Inspector Obed Mohlala, who has worked at the Sandton SPCA for over 30 years, and kennel assistant Corlett Shuma raced off to the scene to rescue the dog.

According to the SPCA, the inspectors quickly realised that a long ladder was going to be the dog’s lifeline. They called Inspector Stephen Malia to bring a ladder through that would allow them to reach the dog.

Shuma was the hero of the day and climbed down the precariously placed ladder to rescue the dog.

The little dog would have starved to death if no one had reported her dire situation. Thankfully she was not injured but was full of ticks and fleas.

The dog was brought to the Sandton SPCA where she had a warm bath with shampoo, ate a big meal, received lots of cuddles and was tucked into a warm bed.
