William Nicol Drive construction problematic

SANDTON – The corner of William Nicol Drive and Mattie Avenue has been experiencing heavy traffic delays of late due to ongoing construction.

The Sandton Chronicle has established that the road construction currently taking place on William Nicol Drive and Matie Avenue has been the cause of increased traffic.

According to Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams, Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) engineers attended to the faulty traffic signal on 10 September, however, the signal tripped shortly after they left, causing traffic.

Communications officer at Johannesburg Road Agency Mosa Makhalima revealed that two cables were damaged during the construction. “We replaced two pieces of SWA [steel wire armoured] cable as well as two pieces of cabtyre cable. Recabling of the traffic signal is planned once construction activities are finalised.”

The construction of Sandton Gate, which will be a diverse precinct offering various retail stores and a residential component, is also in the same vicinity. However, Abland Property Developers managing director Grant Silverman stated that the construction of Sandton Gate has nothing to do with the faulty traffic signals.

“Unfortunately for our development, the traffic light issue on William Nicol Drive and Mattie Avenue is not to our fault, and from what we understand is caused by another party laying cables,” Silverman said.

“We are in contact with the relevant authorities and are trying to assist wherever possible. We do apologise for any inconvenience to motorists and will continue to do our best to address any issues that arise.

“Phase one of the Sandton Gate development will be completed during the month of October, with the new traffic lights outside the new intersection being switched on at the end of September.”
