Investigation launched into collapsed beautification sign

SANDTON – Joburg City Parks is investigating the sudden collapse of beautification sign on the corner of William Nicol Drive and St Andrews Road.

Many motorists travelling along William Nicol Drive from Hyde Park, may have noticed the collapsed Joburg City Parks and Zoo branded beautification sign.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams said he doesn’t know what happened to the collapsed beautification sign on the corner of St Andrews Road and William Nicol Drive, but confirmed that he has escalated the matter to Joburg City Parks and Zoo.

The councillor also labelled the intersection, at William Nicol Drive, Sandton Drive and St Andrews Road, as a flagship spot in the city. “Much effort has gone into beautifying that area and trying to maintain it under difficult circumstances.”

According to the spokesperson for Joburg City Parks and Zoo, Jenny Moodley, City Parks has begun with investigations into the collapsed sign. “At the moment we cannot tell what really led to the collapse of the sign and this is the first sign that has collapsed.”

She added that inclement weather could be the cause, “The entity has plans to ensure that it is reinstated before 25 September.”

Moodley also called for anyone with information to come forward.

According to a displaced resident from Hurlingham Park, Kamogelo Kanete, the beautification sign collapsed because of heavy wind. “The wind was strong and we were sleeping and we just heard a crash. We thought it was a car accident, but when we went up to look, that’s when we discovered that the sign has collapsed.”
