In tweets: Thousands protest against climate change crisis hogging South Africa
SANDTON – "These demands will also be communicated to the South-African President, the Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries and the UN General Secretary," read the statement released by Copac.
Today thousands of South Africans took to the streets of Sandton to have their voice heard regarding the climate change crisis that is worsening every day.
According to a statement that was issued on Wednesday by the Co-operative and Policy Alternative Centre (Copac), the climate justice movement is entering a new phase of confronting national elites, held captive by fossil fuel corporations and carbon-centric imagination.
“In our dialogue with children and youth, we agreed to target Sasol’s headquarters on 20 September. Our children have declared #WeCantBreathe and they will be handing over the memorandum of demands to Sasol’s leadership,” read the statement.

“This is just the start, this is the beginning of a new response to climate change,” said Co-operative and Policy Alternative Centre (Copac) as they were about to hand over the memorandum.
In a released statement, Copac also stated that Sasol together with all other polluters are responsible for toxic air pollution in the society, “We are here to draw attention to the high levels of carbon and toxic air pollution in the affected provinces. about 20 000 people die every year in South Africa from air pollution. One life lost is too many”.
