No place for illegal dumping

MARLBORO – First-time illegal dumping offender required to pay R10 000 after being caught in action by JMPD officers.

Johannesburg Metro Police Officers (JMPD) have been taking no prisoners when it comes to illegal dumping. Residents caught dumping illegally are required to pay an illegal dumping fee of R10 000 as first-time offenders. A motorist who was caught illegally dumping on Zinnia Avenue, Marlboro Gardens on 12 September became the latest culprit.

JMPD officers acted swiftly in impounding the vehicle, while the driver was charged R10 000 after being identified as a first time illegal dumping offender. “There is zero tolerance on illegal dumping, previously the fee was R2970 which was very little destruction to the offender,” said MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun.

Now this comes after the revision of the cities tariffs, where the city council engaged public stakeholders and it was decided that the illegal dumping fee will be increased to R10 000 for first-time offenders, while second-time offenders will pay double the amount.

“With this new implementation of impoundment fees, any vehicle we impound involved in illegal dumping will be taken to the JMPD pound. The owner will have to pay the required fee to release his or her vehicle. Together with that will still be the normal administrative fine and storage fees.

Sun concluded that residents who witness illegal dumping should contact illegal dumping hotline with the correct location, clear pictures, truck registration number, date and time.
