Learners from Redhill School in Morningside took a stand against gender-based violence by partaking in a silent and peaceful protest outside the Sandton Police Station on the morning of 9 September.
Young protesters lined the sidewalk of the busy intersection of Summit and Rivonia roads dressed in all-back attire to support the cause and mourn those who have become a victim of gender-based violence.
The school’s Ubuntu Committee chair Abigail Davies and deputy chair David Kariuk handed over a memorandum to the station’s colonel. The memorandum listed ways in which the station itself could enable itself to create a ‘more welcoming environment for women who have been the victim of a crime’, the school said.
“Officers must be professionally trained to deal with women who have been sexually assaulted with the utmost professionalism. This includes using appropriate language and never blaming the victim for the assault based on their appearance or any other factor,” Abigail said, highlighting an aspect of the memorandum the learners compiled.
“Such a powerful moment as we watched our learners take a stand and make their voices heard. Redhill learners hold the Sandton Police Station to account!” the school added.
Redhill School would like to call on other schools to hold their police stations to account.
