Bryanston High learners show their community spirit

BRYANSTON – Grade 9 learners from Bryanston High School gave up their free time to help out at Ark Animal Centre.

The Grade 9 Representative Council of Learners from Bryanston High School gave up their time to help the Ark Animal Centre.

The community service initiative was initiated by Justine Sayers and the Bryanston High School Grade 9 group of the council and fellow learners. They spent the day cleaning cages and feeding bowls, washing and walking dogs, assisting with adoptions and eventually, as a reward, got to play with the puppies.

Isabel Smith, the Grade 9 head, said, “Building individuals into positive contributors to society involves more than just a good academic education… We have found that this sort of community service helps students to develop life skills, meet their learning objectives, improve discipline and accountability and generally become more well-rounded individuals.”

Smith added that she believes that this commitment to community service is not only satisfying for the learns but also makes learners more successful at school and more employable and attractive to potential employers. “I’m proud of the way they conducted themselves as ambassadors of our school and the Blue Flame.”

Ark is a puppy shelter and non-profit organisation which specialises in puppies, pregnant dogs and small-breed dogs.

Ark founder, Tracy Otto, said, “The Bryanston High School team really made a great impression on us. They really got stuck in and worked hard. They also worked well as a team, for which they must be commended. We have found that being around animals is beneficial for emotional, psychological development, and self-esteem.”

Otto added that caring for animals on a regular basis also teaches responsibility, compassion, and provides a vast array of other qualities that will help the learners become amazing adults in the future.
