Community set for Spruit Day clean-up

SANDTON – The annual Spruit Day clean-up is upon us and community businesses are ready to gear up for the cause.

The Spruit Day community campaign continues to grow as founders Samantha Marshall and Kelly-Ann Rock begin preparing for the annual clean-up set for 19 October this year.

Spruit Day is an initiative driven by all of the communities surrounding the area along the Braamfontein Spruit. According to Rock, volunteers will help pick up litter, plant new trees, remove invasive plants along the river and make eco-bricks.

“The Braamfontein Spruit is the longest stream in Johannesburg with its flowing and surrounding beauty running through multiple neighbourhoods from Northcliff all the way through to Midrand,” Rock added.

The clean-up operation will expand from Alberts Farm in Northcliff through Johannesburg and end in Midrand.

“We appreciate all contributions of time, finances, and services towards the upkeep of our beautiful spruit,” Rock said.

Local businesses and organisations have proudly welcomed the initiative as they too prepare for the clean-up operation.

Gary Jackson of Jackson’s Real Food Market has welcomed the clean-up, “Our business at Jackson’s is all about making our future better by saving the planet and supporting regenerative farming.”

Adam Cooper, owner of AG Recycling Solutions said the initiative correlated well with the company’s values. “Our motto as a company is helping you keep your community tidy and this goes hand in hand in what our business wants to do as a whole for South Africa and Gauteng,” he added.

Samantha Moleta, founder of grocery shop The Refillery added, “We are thrilled to be involved with such a great initiative, with the Spruit clean-up, as it brings the problem home to people who don’t think plastic pollution is as bad as it is because they can’t see it floating in the sea or washed up on remote beaches.”
