Brescia House figure skater shows off talent

BRYANSTON – Brescia House learner Donatella Glatter has been awarded a South African Figure Skating Association blazer for her achievements in figure skating.

A 16-year-old figure skater of Brescia House School has been awarded a South African Figure Skating Association (Safsa) blazer for her achievements in the sport.

Donatella Glatter has been skating since she was seven years old and won her first competition, Rising Stars, just one year later. Since then, Donatella has dedicated herself to the sport.

She said, “Initially figure skating intrigued me because it was something different and unique. It incorporates artistry and physical ability and strength. It is so spectacular to watch and such a mesmerizing sport.”

In the nine years since Donatella first took up the sport, she has received numerous awards. She first obtained her national colours at age 12 and is currently a national figure skater representing Gauteng North in all provincial, interprovincial and national competitions.

Donatella said, “I have had so many proud moments throughout my skating career but one of my most recent ones was when I made the qualifying score for the National Junior Ladies division because it was a challenging score to achieve.”

To qualify for the green blazer, handed out by the South African Figure Skating Association, Donatella needed to receive a qualifying score that would allow her to compete in an International Skating Union Competition and then participate in the competition. Last year Donatella competed in Australia to qualify for her blazer.

“I was ecstatic when I received my Safsa colours and green blazer. It felt like an honour and a privilege. It was an aspiration of mine which became a reality when I was awarded it.”

Donatella will next be competing in the Cape Interprovincial competition which will be held in Cape Town from the 11 to 13 October.
