National Book Week hits the town

SANDTON – National Book Week mascot Funda Bala hit the town running to encourage smiles and book donations.

Donations for National Book Week kicked off on Saturday, 24 August at Exclusive Books in Sandton City with mascot Funda Bala embarking on a mall tour.

Supported by the Department of Arts and Culture and the South African Book Development Council, Book Week will be celebrated from 2 to 8 September this year.

Funda Bala, which means ‘read, read’ in Nguni and Sotho, came out to encourage children and parents to purchase one of the available books to donate to National Book Week’s #BuyABook campaign.

“Books are not only rich with stories, but also rich with information. Books inform and inspire. Books remain the most cost effective intervention to develop our country,” South African Book Development Council CEO Elitha van der Sandt said in a recent statement.

At the end of book week, donated books will be collected from all participating stores and donated to reading projects and festivals across the country.

“We hope Funda Bala will inspire all parents and shoppers to buy books to donate so that children in remote parts of the country can own a book,” Sandt added.

The #BuyABook campaign will run for two weeks and end in cohesion with National Book Week.

All are encouraged to purchase a book from the selected list of titles for R20 from Exclusive Books, Bargain Books, Love Books, Ethnikids or Bridge Books.

Don’t miss the SA Book Fair at Constitution Hill from 6 to 8 September. Keep informed about the campaign supported under the Caxton Cares banner by following #WeRead #ReadBecause #CaxtonCares #BuyABook
