SANDTON – The cause of Tshegofatso Selahle's death is unknown and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the death of a 35-year-old man who died following his arrest in Sandton.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department arrested Tshegofatso Selahle on 17 August. Selahle apparently died in the early hours of 18 August. According to Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the JMPD, officers chased an Audi A5 for disregarding a red light at William Nicol and Sandton drives. They added that the driver sped off, which resulted in a chase. The driver of the Audi collided with a curb and the vehicle landed in a park.

Minnaar said, “The driver was aggressive and resisted arrest because he was under the influence of alcohol. The officers called for backup and when more officers arrived, he was restrained and handcuffed.”

He added that Selahle was aggressive and refused to be taken to the Alcohol Centre for testing.

Minnaar said that Selahle was put inside a JMPD van and Selahle informed officers that he was struggling to breathe. “They took him out of the van and officers called for an ambulance. When the ambulance arrived, and upon patient assessment, they found out that he had collapsed. Upon further medical assessment, the initial crew could not find signs of life and subsequently requested for advanced life support. With the arrival of the advanced life support team, the alleged suspect was declared dead.”
