The City of Johannesburg council recently approved the debit rehabilitation programme that aims to assist defaulting customers get back in good standing with their municipal accounts.
The debt relief will only be given to households that meet certain criteria which include:
- Combined gross income of the account holder(s) and spouse must be between R4 750 and R2 2000 per month
- The total market value of the property and all properties owned by the account holder(s) must not exceed R600 000
- A write-off is only applicable to residential account holders
- Account-holders balance arrears must be more than 90 days from 30 June 2019.
Customers who meet the criteria will receive an immediate 50 per cent debt write-off, the outstanding debt can be written off if they comply with all the conditions of the programme. The account holders would need to keep their current accounts up to date during a three year period and allow for inspection of metered services.
The debt rehabilitation education drive will take place at these locations on these dates:
- Midrand Fire Station, auditorium, 19th First Street, Halfway Gardens, Midrand on 20 August, at 6pm–8pm
- Rabie Ridge Community hall, Korhaan Crescent, Rabie Ridge, 22 August, at 6pm–8pm
- Diepsloot Youth Hall, 383 Ingonyama Street, Diepsloot West, 24 August at 1pm–3pm
- Lord Khanyile Hall, Mathebuka Street, Ivory Park 2, 24 August at 10am–12pm
- Marlboro Community Hall, 52 Zinnia Drive, Marlboro Gardens, Sandton on 28 August at 6pm–8pm.
