Sandton adventure-seekers raise over R150 000 for SPCA

SANDTON – The team took part in the 8 000km Put Foot Rally across Africa to help raise money for the SPCA.

Three adventurous friends from Sandton who embarked on an 8 000km trip across Africa have helped raise over R150 000 for the SPCA.

James Gresty, Gert van Zyl and Paul Warner decided to embark on the Put Foot Rally to experience a new adventure and decided to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts.

The Put Foot Rally, which has taken place over the past 10 years, sees adventurous crews travelling across six countries. This year the Put Foot Foundation raised money to donate school shoes to children in Zambia. As an additional fundraiser, the team decided to raise funds for a new vehicle for the Lower South SPCA.

Warner said, “It was an adventure of a lifetime and each country has something special about it.” He added that it was an amazing experience to be able to fundraise for a cause which was so special to them.

Gresty, who originally suggested the trip, said that leading up to the trip he thought it might have been his worst idea ever. However, now that he has completed the trip he said it was an amazing experience with so many special memories.

Of the three, Gresty is the only one who said he would like to do it again. “I do think I would like to do it again but it was really our team that made it so great so I would want to do it with them.”

Warner said that the journey was incredibly difficult with many potholes and car accidents. Thankfully, their team made it through the entire trip with only a chip on their windscreen.

Van Zyl added that it was a very social trip and a wonderful way to meet new people from around the world. He said that he could not believe how much money they had managed to raise.

“It started with a small amount and it really just grew from there, I’m very proud of what we managed to do and I’ve already started searching for a vehicle,” said Van Zyl.

He concluded that while it was a great adventure, being able to buy the SPCA a vehicle made the trip so much more worthwhile.
