Stop animal cruelty

SANDTON – Sandton SPCA puts a stop to animal cruelty.

Alexandra resident Cassius Popela (25) has been found guilty of animal cruelty and was fined R2 000 or serve three years in jail.

Animal cruelty charges were laid against Popela on 19 March after he had reacted with extreme violence when a neighbours’ cat wandered into his house. He locked the cat up and brutally battered the feline to death with a brick before throwing the body into the neighbour’s yard. The Sandton SPCA was alerted and responded soon after the incident. The body was brought back to the Sandton SPCA Clinic where an autopsy was conducted.

It was revealed that the cat suffered numerous fatal injuries including internal bleeding, bruised lungs and multiple fractures to the jaw, skull and ribs.

This month, the magistrate found the accused guilty as charged and sentenced him to a fine of R2 000 or three years’ imprisonment. Taking into consideration Popela’s young age, his family and the fact that he had no prior convictions, the magistrate suspended the sentence for three years. During this time frame, Popela must not violate Section 2 and Section 3 of the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962 and may not own any animal.

The Sandton SPCA has declared this outcome a victory for the animals and justice for the cat. “There was a time when incidents of animal cruelty were not taken seriously and would not even get to court. These days are over,” said Inspector Stephen Maila.

“At the Sandton SPCA, no matter is left unattended. We will bring animal cruelty incidents to court and follow through until justice has been served. This case is a good reflection on the justice system because offences like this one do go to court and convictions can be made.”
