Sandton Police Station launches music project for children
SANDTON – The project will take place once a week at the Sefikeng Primary School.
The Sandton Police Station has launched an after-school music project to assist disadvantaged children.
Captain Granville Meyer, the spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station said that the project will take place every Tuesday afternoon at the Sefikeng Primary School in Sunninghill.
Meyer explained that the Ikamva Music Project, which means ‘the future’ is an after-school music project that seeks to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged children and youth by offering them an opportunity to participate in a marimba band and other musical groups.
The group has started with seven learners, however, Meyer hopes to include more learners. The learners will have the opportunity to play a range of genres and have started with marimba.
“It seeks to propagate music specifically as an alternative tool for children and youth as opposed to gangsterism, drugs and other self-destructive practices of popular culture,” said Meyer.
On the first Saturday of August, the music project will also be giving recorder lessons to 20 children.
“Through music and movement, underprivileged young people are given opportunities to participate in a positive and desirable activity which teaches them skills, develops their imagination, team spirit and self-discipline, giving hope of a better future,” concluded Meyer.
