Members of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) have been praised for a swift arrest of suspected hijackers in Sandton.
A video shared on the roads agency’s Twitter page show the driver of a pink van being hijacked on the N3 highway near London Road in Alexandra.
Operators of the CCTV cameras witnessed the incident and used cameras to track the vehicle and notified the metro police to assist with arresting the suspects and rescuing the hijacked driver.
The CCTV footage shows the hijacked vehicle travelling toward the Buccleuch Interchange. Metro police officers can be seen waiting at the William Nicol Drive on-ramp before forcing the hijacked vehicle to pull over.
Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the spokesperson for Metro police, confirmed that two men were arrested for hijacking and the victim was rescued unharmed.
Minnaar praised the CCTV operators for acting swiftly and ensuring that the hijacked vehicle was recovered and the victim was safe.
