Rand Water gives an update on the major pipeline maintenance work
JOBURG – The major pipeline repair is on track but consumers have been advised to continue to use water sparingly.
Rand Water has released information on the pipeline shutdown which forms part of their planned 54-hour water maintenance work which was announced last week and commenced on 24 June.
The maintenance work is for a major pipeline due for repair. Rand Water’s media relations manager Justice Mohale said the first step taken was to isolate the pipeline and drain the water. The activity started at 6am and was completed at 10pm on Monday (24 June). The pipeline is 12km long and 2 500mm in diameter, the majority of the water needed to be drained and repairing is on track.
Mohale added, “The remaining work activities for the duration of the shutdown consists primarily of welding, testing and the commissioning the new line. The shutdown is operating on a 24-hour shift structure.”

If there are any problems or water shortage, Rand Water has a ‘war room’ to address them and which is monitoring the water reservoirs.
MMC for Environmental and Infrastructure Services, Nico de Jager assured Joburg residents that there would be no water shortage during the maintenance work as the City of Joburg is using water reservoirs to continue to provide water.
