SANDTON – South Africa is celebrating Youth month. We asked the community to share their views on Youth Day.
GLADYS TSHAYISO: For me, Youth Day is important because the youth of the past fought for our freedom. We should be very grateful, especially when it comes to their contribution to the education sector.
The month of June is considered Youth Month as youth day falls on 16 June.
On this day South Africa commemorates the 1976 Soweto Uprising to pay tribute to learners who stood up against the apartheid government. The Sandton Chronicle went to the streets and asked the community what youth day meant to them. Here’s what they had to say…
ANDREW MAMABOLO: Youth Day is very important because it commemorates people who contributed to fight the struggle. It’s always nice to remember our heroes.
ASANDA RAPIA: I think Youth Day should be celebrated by all South Africans. It is an opportunity to look back and reflect on how far we’ve come as a country.
KAREN WINGARD: Youth Day for me means freedom. Freedom to express ourselves and it serves as a reminder, that the youth matter as well and we can make a difference if we really put our minds to it.
BONGANI NTULI: In my opinion, Youth Day is one day that the youth should understand. They should know their past in order to know where they are going.
LLOYD SHAW: To be honest, I feel the youth of today don’t take Youth Day seriously, it’s almost as if they don’t understand the importance of it. It’s really disappointing.
