Sandton SPCA raids illegal chicken abattoir and confiscates over 200 chickens

SANDTON – The Sandton SPCA found the chickens in terrible conditions and 259 chickens were confiscated.


The Sandton SPCA recently conducted a raid on an illegal chicken abattoir and confiscated over 250 chickens.

The Sandton SPCA conducted a proactive and joint inspection with stakeholders from the Environmental Health Department, Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development was undertaken in Bertrams in the south of Johannesburg.

A warrant was obtained and the illegal abattoir was raided on 31 May. Inspectors found 259 chickens in an overcrowded, dirty room and had no freedom of movement. The inspectors found that the room did not have adequate ventilation or sunlight and there were unbearable levels of ammonia.

The inspectors also observed evidence of slaughter. The chickens did not have access to water and there was no food for the chickens. Inspectors also found that most of the chickens had a loss of feathers and bruises.

All live chickens were confiscated and taken to the Sandton SPCA and criminal charges in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 will be laid against the owner of the illegal operation.
