House robber in custody after Kelvin homeowner fights back

JOHANNESBURG – The complainant overpowered the suspect and the firearm fell on the ground.

A house robber was arrested by the police in Kelvin, north of Johannesburg, after he was apparently overpowered by the property owner.

The spokesperson for the unit, senior personnel officer Raymond Sambo, said the incident happened on 3 June while the family was in the house.

“The complainant alleges that the three suspects were trying to gain entry into the property, but only one of them managed to gain entry and pointed a 9mm firearm at the complainant and his family,” said Sambo.

“The complainant said he overpowered the suspect and the firearm fell on the ground, while the other two suspects ran away. The complainant managed to alert the security to assist to subdue the suspect.”

On arriving, police arrested the suspect and detained him at Sandton Police Station, facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted house robbery, added Sambo.

He said the serial number of the firearm was filed off, adding that the suspect has since appeared in court.
