Primestars kicks off Youth Month with career guidance programme

SANDTON – Hundreds of learners participated in My Future My Career programme to learn more about potential career opportunities.

Primestars kicked off Youth Month with their My Future My Career cinema experience at Sandton City.

My Future My Career is a career guidance programme run by Primestars that encourages learners to explore career opportunities available to them and understand the requirements for different careers. Learners from grades 9 to 12 have the opportunity to attend the programme and interact with industry professionals to prepare themselves for the world of work.

Nkosinathi Moshoana, the general manager for Primestars said, “Today marks a very important day in our calendar and the country’s calendar.

“Forty-three years ago a group of young people put their lives on the line to emancipate young people to enable them to study educate ourselves to be better people.”

He added that this sacrifice allowed young people to take advantage of opportunities today to get a better education for themselves.

The My Future My Career programme was started by Martin Sweet 14 years ago and originally hosted 167 learners in one cinema to learn maths and science. Since then the project has grown considerably and now educates more than 90 000 learners.

Moshoana said one of the struggles young people faced was not knowing what they wanted to do with their lives and how to do it. He commended the learners for taking time out of their Sunday morning to wake up early and participate in the programme and think seriously about their future.

“Now is the time for us, the youth, to take the baton from those who fought for us in the past and look forward. We can no longer look back, we have to build on the youth of 1976 and be leaders in our own homes, schools and communities and take this country to place we all aspire to.”

During the experience, learners had the chance to hear from a range of career professionals to explain their career and how they got to their position. Former programme beneficiaries also shared how the programme had impacted them and what they have done with the opportunities they were provided.
