WATCH: It’s Not About Me organisation hopes to provide safe haven for women

SANDTON – A fundraiser in Sandton will help raise the necessary funds to run two safe houses in Johannesburg.

A fundraiser will be hosted in Sandton to raise much-needed funds for two homes of safety for abused women and their children.

The homes of safety, run by the It’s Not About Me non-profit organisation, will provide refuge for up to six months while the women get the necessary court orders and acquire legal protection.

Two properties were generously donated to the non-profit, however, the fundraiser, which will be hosted at the Maslow Hotel, aims to raise the funds to run the safe houses and ensure that the women who stay on the properties have all their needs addressed.

Shereen Hunter, the founder of It’s Not About Me, said that she had spent much of her life dedicated to helping others and her passion is to mobilise people within communities who are able to offer their resources to those in need.

“We’ve cut through all the bureaucratic red tape that you find in a lot of non-profit work… we’ve said it doesn’t matter which part of society you are a part of. If you make it not about you, you really can do what you can with what you have.”

Hunter added that they hoped, through their work, to work with other non-profit organisations to ensure that all available resources from the various organisations get to people who are most in need.
