‘Drunk’ man arrested after allegedly attempting to bribe Metro police officers

ILLOVO – Drunk man arrested by Metro police after attempting to bribe officers.

A drunk driver who attempted to bribe Metro police officials on Oxford Road in Illovo, was arrested in Parktown on 15 May after he attempted to flee from police.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said, “The drunken driver fled from officers who stopped him at a routine roadside check on Oxford Road. Officers had to chase him from Illovo to Parktown after he tried to bribe them with R410.”

Minnaar added that he was arrested and detained at the Bramley Police Station at about 10pm on 15 May.

He will face charges of bribery and corruption and drunken driving when he appears in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

Minnaar urged the public to refrain from bribing officers. “The tide has turned with the new chief of [Metro police] David Tembe who is taking a very tough stance against corruption.”
