Bryanston High learners hard at work to make Chicago Musical a success

BRYANSTON – The musical will be performed from 14 to 17 May.

Bryanston High School learners and teachers are hard at work preparing for their upcoming major production of Chicago.

The musical, which was originally based on a 1926 play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, has been adapted to suit high school learners. The musical includes acting, singing and dancing from young learners and pulls out all the stops to blow away audiences.

About 40 learners will be performing on stage while 31 learners while be involved behind the scenes helping backstage and with the sound.

Ashleigh Venter and Michele de Klerk, both teachers at Bryanston High School, have been in charge of all aspects of the play including the choreography and directing. Venter said that the cast is a bit smaller than some of their other major productions at the school but they tried to include everyone who wanted to be involved.

Auditions began late last year and rehearsals began in January. Venter said that all the learners involved have been working incredibly hard since the start of rehearsals while still trying to balance their schoolwork and other extra-curricular activities.

“They think that you are tough on them when we first begin rehearsing but it’s amazing to see how much their talent develop,” said Venter.

She said this will be the fifth year she has worked on the major production and is amazed to see the talent of the learners.

She added that it is not just on stage that they witness learners progressing but backstage as well. Learners who work backstage help create all the sets and Venter said she is amazed to see everything they are able to create.

Venter concluded that there is great support from parents and learners at the school as well as the greater community who attend their performances.

The show will take place at the school from 14 May to 17 May. For more information about tickets contact Teresa Cook on teresacook@bryanston.com
